An unexpected event can undo years of savings and planning. Insurance is not a product but a strategy for protecting human and financial capital.

Personal financial planning cannot do without one fundamental principle: protection. Knowing how to manage money also means knowing how to manage risk, yet in Italy the insurance culture remains one of the weakest areas of financial education. Many citizens see insurance as a cost rather than as a tool for protection and prevention. In reality, good insurance coverage is an invisible but decisive pillar in building and preserving family wealth.

Protection as a form of investment
An unexpected event can compromise years of savings and planning. Damage to the home, accidents, illness or legal disputes often have an economic impact that is underestimated. Insurance, in this sense, is not only a product but above all a strategy for protecting human and financial capital. Every policy represents a transfer of risk: a rational choice that makes it possible to turn a potential uncertain loss into a certain, planned and manageable cost. This is the logic of prevention, which should be taught alongside concepts such as return and savings.

Insurance education: a gap to fill
Italy records one of the lowest levels of insurance literacy in Europe. According to IVASS data, a large share of the population does not know key terms such as deductible, maximum limit, excess or waiting period. This creates a twofold vulnerability: on one side, citizens take out inadequate or overly expensive policies; on the other, many give up protecting themselves altogether. Introducing modules on insurance education in schools and adult learning courses would help bridge this gap, teaching that protecting one’s income and one’s family is an integral part of individual financial responsibility.

Policies and integrated planning
Proper wealth planning must integrate investment and protection. Life policies and accident cover form the basis of family security, while home and third-party liability coverage protect assets and people from unexpected events. The most common mistake is to treat these tools separately: a well-built portfolio should balance returns and protection, calibrating insurance premiums according to income and life goals. Periodic review of coverage is also essential: needs change, as do market conditions and regulations.

In conclusion, financial education cannot be considered complete if it ignores the insurance dimension. Protecting one’s wealth does not only mean reducing risk, but also ensuring continuity and peace of mind for future generations. In a world marked by economic instability and recurring crises, prevention is the smartest form of investment. Building a culture of protection, based on information and awareness, is an educational and social priority. Only by understanding the value of insurance as a tool for balance and security can we truly speak of sustainable wealth planning.
